How to count the till at closing
- Sort the notes by value and count each pile.
- Do the same with the coins; stack many coins in tens.
- Type the counts; check the total.
- Type the float you left in the till in the morning: what is left is today’s cash.
- Type the cash sales from your book: you see at once if the till is over or short.
₹500 × 3, ₹200 × 2, ₹100 × 5, ₹50 × 4, ₹20 × 6, ₹10 × 9 notes + ₹10 × 4, ₹5 × 6, ₹2 × 5, ₹1 × 8 coins = ₹2,898 in the till Float ₹500 → today’s cash ₹2,398 Book says ₹2,400 in cash sales: the till is ₹2 short
Which notes and coins are listed?
Each currency lists the notes and coins its central bank has in circulation now. India: ₹10 to ₹500 notes and ₹1 to ₹20 coins (the ₹2000 note was withdrawn from circulation in 2023, so it is left out). Nigeria: ₦5 to ₦1000 notes. Kenya: KSh 50 to 1000 notes and 1 to 20 shilling coins. Philippines: ₱20 to ₱1000 notes and coins from 25 sentimo to ₱20. US: $1 to $100 notes and coins up to 25¢ (pennies are no longer made but still count). Pick Other money to type your own values.
Why the till does not add up
- A sale on credit was rung up as cash (or the other way round).
- A card or mobile payment was counted as cash.
- Cash was taken out for an expense and not written down.
- Wrong change was given.
Baki Fast’s Cash book keeps the day’s money in and out, with credit and payments apart, so the difference at closing is easy to find: cash book.
