VAT calculator (Ghana)
Add Ghana’s VAT and levies in one step: since 1 January 2026 they come to 20% in all, so GH₵1,000 before tax is GH₵1,200. Of the GH₵200, GH₵150 is VAT, GH₵25 NHIL and GH₵25 GETFund.

How VAT is worked out in Ghana
- Add VAT: tax = price before tax × 20% (VAT 15% + NHIL 2.5% + GETFund 2.5%); price with tax = price × 1.20.
- Remove VAT: price before tax = price with tax ÷ 1.20; the tax is the difference.
- Split the tax: of every 20 cedis of tax, 15 are VAT, 2.50 NHIL and 2.50 GETFund: three quarters, one eighth and one eighth.
- Amounts are rounded to the pesewa. When the tax is taken out of a price, the price before tax and the tax always add up to the price, and the three parts always add up to the tax.
A sale of GH₵50.00, VAT and levies included: 50.00 ÷ 1.20 = 41.666… → GH₵41.67 before tax Tax: 50.00 − 41.67 = GH₵8.33 VAT GH₵6.25 + NHIL GH₵1.04 + GETFund GH₵1.04
The 20% is not taken from the price that already includes it. 20% of GH₵1,200 is GH₵240, but the tax inside GH₵1,200 is GH₵200: 1,200 × 20 ÷ 120.
What changed on 1 January 2026
The Value Added Tax Act, 2025 (Act 1151) took effect on 1 January 2026. The Ghana Revenue Authority lists these changes:
- VAT stays at 15%, and NHIL and GETFund stay at 2.5% each: 20% in all.
- The COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy is abolished.
- NHIL and GETFund can now be claimed as input tax, like VAT.
- The VAT Flat Rate Scheme (VFRS) is abolished.
- The VAT registration threshold for businesses that deal in goods went up from GH₵200,000 to GH₵750,000.
A price list or calculator that still adds the COVID-19 levy is out of date. Work from the price before tax and the 20%.
Checking a supplier’s bill
Type the total of a bill from a VAT-registered supplier and choose Remove VAT: you see the price before tax and the VAT, NHIL and GETFund inside it. If you are VAT-registered yourself, all three now count as input tax you can claim.
VAT and your credit book
Write a sale on credit at what the customer will pay, VAT and levies included. Baki Fast is a credit book, not invoicing software: it does not issue VAT invoices, so keep issuing those as usual. More in selling on credit: the rules.

Questions
What is the new VAT rate in Ghana?
20% in all since 1 January 2026: VAT 15%, NHIL 2.5% and GETFund 2.5%, each on the price before tax, and the COVID-19 levy no longer applies. On GH₵500 that is GH₵100 of tax, so the customer pays GH₵600.
How do I calculate VAT from a price that includes it?
Divide the price by 1.20 to get the price before tax; the rest is the tax. GH₵360 ÷ 1.20 = GH₵300, so the tax is GH₵60: GH₵45 VAT, GH₵7.50 NHIL and GH₵7.50 GETFund.
